The world comes to Berlin

27th FAIRY TALE DAYS OF BERLIN 2016

"SLEEPING BEAUTY AWAKES…! GIRLS AND WOMEN IN FAIRY TALES AND STORIES”
3rd. till 20th. November 2016

Fairy tales and stories are the roots of literature. Multilayered and reflective as they are, they always offer new possibilities for interpretation. This applies in particulartothe image of girls and women in fairy tales.

The most well-known and widespread image is one of a helpless and passive beauty that waits until she is redeemed or freed by a male hero. But actually, the motive of an active woman who, for example, rescues her man or seeks to win him over for herself, or one of a woman riding at the head of an army, who is wise andshrewd, and who takes her own fate and the fate of her people in her own hands, is much more frequent in fairy tales and stories than it is anchored in the awareness of our society.

In many feminine fairy tales and legends, female figures reflect those of ancient religions.Matriarchy was a time of the cults of the "Great Mother", the fertility and

motherhood goddesses. But in the course of Christianization these complexities were destroyed, the light and the dark side separated. The cultic festivals became the witches' Sabbaths.

With the 27th Berlin Fairytale Days "Sleeping Beauty awakes ... ! " MÄRCHENLAND is showing the broad spectrum of girls and women in fairy tales and stories.

Whether queen, princess or a Valkyrie; whether a fairy, a mermaid or an elf, whether herbalist, magician or witch; whether handmaid, farmer's daughter or a hunter- during the festival, we will follow the footsteps of fabulous female characters from literature, art, politics and economy and we will build bridges into the present day- to the power women, super and wonder women!

"Some men try all their lives long to understand the nature of a woman. Others occupy themselves with less difficult matters, i.e. the theory of relativity."
